RCM Practical Examinations
The Royal Conservatory of Music examinations offer a great challenge and milestone for students of all levels and ages. Achievements with RCM are widely accepted in schools across Canada and the US, and serve as a learning experience in resilience and discipline.
From practical requirements of technique such as scales to the musical requirements of expression within repertoire, RCM is a thoroughly structured curriculum for continuous musical growth.
Instrument levels range from Preparatory all the way to Grade 10 and beyond, with co-requisite music theory requirements that strengthen students' overall understanding of the music they are playing. The RCM curriculum focuses on classical music, but serves as a great foundation for building overall musicianship and technical skills that allow for endless exploration in other genres as well.
Our teachers, with a wealth of experience in these examinations, can guide you towards your musical academic goals!
Music Theory Examinations & AP Music Theory
As a co-requisite requirement to RCM examinations of Level 5 and beyond, students often take theory lessons alongside their instrumental lessons. Offer in private and group format, these weekly lessons are designed to help musicians truly grasp what can be a confusing subject, and help them achieve a mark that they are happy with. Beyond exams, music theory serves as the basis to understanding the repertoire the student is playing, and leads to skills such as song-writing, improvising, and more.
Music Theory AP is a great Advanced Placement exam to have on your CV. As an extension of basic music theory, this subject covers listening, writing, and analysis. Completing this course will leave you with a strong foundation for any creative musical pursuits such as production or composition. It is recommended that students sign up for the AP exam as early in the school year as possible to guarantee a seat, as Music Theory AP is a very popular exam in Vancouver.

Music Production & Song Writing
If you ever wanted to release your own song but don't know where to start, this is the course for you. Available to students of all musical skill levels, Our fully equipped music studio and teachers can help you write a song from start to finish. Music theory and previous musical experience is helpful but not required.
Using traditional Digital Audio Workstations (DAWs), raw creativity, and no AI, we will guide you through the full process including lyric writing, music production, and song release schedules to as much or as little as you would like. We understand that you want to take centre stage as the main creative, and we will support that in whatever way we can.
Whether you would like to write a song in your favourite genre, produce something similar to your favourite artist, or create a piece of music entirely unique to yourself, we've got you covered. This is the perfect capstone project to show off everything that you have learned in music, and reward yourself with the fruits of your labour.
Live Performance Opportunities
We understand that not all students are interested in taking exams, and may simply focus on the joy of creating music. For these students, we have just the right fit. A great milestone of achievement is simply noticing your improvements from performance to performance. Thus, AMA Music offers a wealth of opportunities for students to show off their talents.
There are many volunteer opportunities throughout the year for which your teacher can sign you up to perform. Including but not limited to performances at seniors' homes, gigs with teachers, and city performances.
Every May, AMA music holds a studio recital through Vancouver Youth Music Foundation where students demonstrate all they have learned in the past year. With fully equipped professional audio and video recording, these are memories you won't soon forget.
